How to Write Birthday Card Messages
Before you write your birthday card message, you need to make sure you get a card. Birthday cards come in all shapes and sizes for all kinds of people. Depending on who you're wishing a happy birthday to, you'll want to have a different card. Someone with a good sense of humor may enjoy a joking card, while a more philosophical person may enjoy a more thought-provoking card with a long poem.

When writing a message inside a birthday card, it's important to remember whom you're writing to. Different people will appreciate different messages. Some people would love to read a paragraph on what they mean to you, while other people only want a "happy birthday" written inside their card. Your message should match the person you're sending it to as much as it should express what you feel and who you are. The point of a birthday card message is to make the recipient feel special and cared for, like they matter to you. Give them well-wishes, compliment them, insert a message updating them on your life, tell them you miss them if you do, and perhaps include a reference to anything extra you may have put in the card, such as money or concert tickets.

Before you write in the card, take a piece of scrap paper and jot down your message there. If you mess up, you will need to buy (or make!) another card. It's much easier to not mess up in the first place and to have what you're going to write chosen beforehand. Make sure you write in pen as well, at least for most cards, because it looks cleaner and more professional than pencil. You can also ask a trusted friend to read what you've written to proofread it or to see if it flows. However, remember that you always make the final decision on what advice to listen to. Don't allow your opinion to be swayed unless you truly think there is something to be mended, and don't allow your writing style to be changed, as this will make your message feel far less personal.

Birthday card messages matter but it isn't the end of the world if your recipient doesn't love your message. In most cases, they will adore what you've written and will be happy to have received your card. If it doesn't turn out as well as you wished, well, there's always next year!
