5 Ways To Make Your Loved One Feel Special On Their Birthday

The birthday party is a time honored tradition for celebrating a loved one's special day, but there are plenty of other ways to surprise and celebrate your special someone on their big day.

1) Start their day off with a card or note in an unexpected place. Try placing the note in a much used location in a backpack, packing it in their lunch, leaving it on the dashboard of the car, or scrawling it on the bathroom mirror. 2) If you will have to be apart for a portion of the day, give them a brief call just to let them know that you are thinking about them, and hope that their birthday is going great so far. Be silly or sappy. Make up a song about how they make you feel and sing it. You don't have to be talented to get great reactions. Remember, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

3) Never underestimate the power of a surprise special delivery. Flowers, candies, and cookies are among the most popular delivery items, but don't be afraid to let your imagination expand.

4) Do an errand or chore for them. This can be something that they have been putting off for some time, or simply a daily task that they find disagreeable. Ladies may want to consider taking the car(s) in for an oil change, doing some yard work, or washing the car(s) inside and out. Gentlemen should consider things such as offering to cook dinner, run errands, or help with some other project she would like done.

5) Make physical affections a priority. A little extra cuddling, or a few extra hugs throughout the day for loved ones who are comfortable with physical closeness can really help them feel extra special and loved. For less enthusiastic cuddlers, an affectionate pat on the back, a playful tousling of hair, or a quick hug may be more comfortable and enjoyable.

Above all, consider what makes them truly shine as an individual and be sure to give them as many opportunities to do so as you possibly can as you celebrate the anniversary of their birth.

To Remove Your Shoes or Not at the Front Door

Where I currently live in Hawaii, is it the standard practice to take off your shoes when you enter a home and leave them off until you depart. Usually the owner of the home will have a shoe rack made of wood or metal on their front porch where you can leave your silipa or slippas (slippers), sandals, shoes or boots. It is pretty much a give away that you are not local if you leave your shoes on when you enter a home.

Most locals also understand that visitors or tourists are not aware of the custom, and have little signs at the door saying to leave your shoes off when you enter. Some say "no need" if they don't mind you leaving them on. Oftentimes, we look around at the various shoes left on the front porch to see if we like any other shoes better than our own, and joke around that we may take them. A couple of times, I have had my shoes taken, but figure they must have needed them more than I did!

My father came to stay with us a few months here in Hawaii. He is of Scottish ancestry, and has lived all his life in Utah. He has very tender feet, having worn shoes and socks his whole life from dawn to dusk. I told him not to worry about taking his shoes off when he is here in Hawaii. He doesn't even like the feel of the sand on his feet, so I don't force him. My feet have toughened up a bit over the years, so I actually prefer no shoes. Personally, I can hardly wait to take my shoes off for whatever reason.

Then there is my husband, who can't make up mind to leave them on or take them off. I find several pairs of his shoes in little corners stashed throughout the house wherever he decided to take them off!

In Japan, shoes are removed so they do not tear the straw floor covering. Some housing contracts in Tokyo actually retain some of the deposit if it is found that the renters are not removing their shoes inside their apartments. Also, the word for outside shoes in Japanese is "dosoku" which means soiled feet. They have a saying which means to dishonor horribly (dosoku de fuminjiru ) translated - dishonorably stepping on with outdoor footwear.

In other parts of the world, many people cannot afford shoes, or it is their custom not to wear any shoes in or outside. Many people sit and sleep on their floors, so wearing shoes in the home would bring in mud or dirt from outside.

In Fiji, men in certain tribes like to show their bravery by walking on hot coals without any protection. To get them toughened up for this activity, they go without shoes and calluses form on their feet. Here, again, to wear shoes or not has a lot to do with where you were brought up.

In some parts of the world, people take of their outside shoes, and don or slip on some house slippers. It is also a show of respect to remove your shoes when entering a temple or mosque. As a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (otherwise known as Mormons), when we enter our temple, we are required to remove our regular shoes and put on a pair of white shoes.

In Exodus, in the Bible, it mentions that the Lord told Moses to remove his shoes because he was walking on Holy Ground. Shoes are tools used by man to get around in the imperfect world. But out of respect, submission and acceptance, we take off our shoes when entering sacred space.

A Hindu concept is that for chakra energy to work. When one goes barefoot, you can connect root chakra. For the earth to communicate with your chakra, you must remove your shoes.

On a more practical level, taking your shoes off means that the oil on your feet can be absorbed into carpet or rugs. Guests are encouraged in some homes to leave their shoes on for this purpose.

For those that suffer from allergies or lung disease, it is best that people take their shoes off when entering so they do not bring along pathogens that would cause an allergic reaction.

Another opinion is that you bring in 80 percent of the dirt that is in your home on your shoes.

7 Easy Steps To Successful Couponing

You have seen the shows where people are saving tons of money and getting products for little to no money. Wouldn't we all love that? I thought it was impossible until I got started in couponing and realized that I too could be stocking my cabinets full of household items for little money. So I decided to help others save money too by putting together 7 Easy Steps to Successful Couponing.

Step 1
Gather your coupons: This can be done by buying your local Sunday paper for the coupon inserts. You can also get some from neighbors and family to help you get started. Buying multiple papers helps you to build a larger collection quickly. You can get coupons in various locations once you learn the basics.

Step 2
Clip all the coupons when you first get started. This will insure that you have them all in case you come across a really good deal at the store. There are many ways to 'keep' your coupons but this one is the easiest when you are staring out. There are different theories to this philosophy which will be covered in future articles Clipping or Saving.

Step 3
Organize your coupons: Organize your coupons into a 3 ring binder with baseball card type plastic sheets. There are several ways to prepare your binder...see article: Preparing Coupon Binder. This binder will become your newest best friend.

Step 4
Study the sales ads: Study the ads of your local stores to find great sales that match up to your coupons. This seems tedious at first but will get easier with time. There are shortcuts to this step which will be covered in the future article Matching Your Coupons To Stores.

Step 5
Learn the lingo and Store Policies: You will notice when getting started that there are a lot of acronyms used in couponing. ECB, RR, SS are just a few that you will see when reading through things on the internet. See Couponing Lingo 101. It is also important to know the couponing policy for each store. Print out a copy for your 3 favorite stores so you have them with you if a sales clerk isn't up to snuff on the policy themselves. This is key!

Step 6
Visit websites: Visit the websites of your favorite stores in order to find Store Coupons that match your manufacturer coupons. They can be used together for added savings at most stores. This is called Stacking Your Coupons. You can also visit the manufacturers websites and Facebook pages to get added coupons.

Step 7
Go to the store and try it out! This is probably the hardest step for me because I was very nervous and excited when I did my first few transactions. It may be easier for you to take a friend or family member with you the first few times so that you get more comfortable with coupling. Always take your coupon binder with you just in case there are additional items on sale that you have a coupon for to save money.

Choosing and Caring for Children's Bedding

When making a child's bedroom some of the concerns are the quality, comfort, warmth, and care of the bedding, bedding sets and accessories. So in choosing the sheets you can go low quality or high, your choice. Three choices are cotton, flannel and polyester.

When choosing cotton sheets and bedding look for all natural cotton and try to avoid material that contains harmful chemicals and dyes. Cotton is hypoallergenic so it is less likely to cause an allergic reaction. Cotton sheets can become stale quickly, so you need to air and launder them often. Cotton sheets are very absorbent, which makes them comfortable in many kinds of weather. But the absorbency can lead to musty smells.

Proper care will keep them soft and beautiful. Wash cotton sheets in a load by themselves. Use cold water and mild laundry soap. Do not use chlorine bleach. Chlorine bleach can damage the cotton fibers over time; use a non-chlorine bleach to brighten ivory or white cotton sheets. Remove soon as the wash is done to help reduce wrinkles. Dry on low temperature setting, set the dry on a shorter cycle and take the sheets out before they are completely dry and hang them to finish drying.

To keep your child cozy and warm at night specially in the winter months, flannel is the sheets to go with. To choose the best flannel sheets, check the fabric weight, that's how they are rated not by thread count. Bed sheets that weigh 5-6 ounces per yard are by far the best choice. They keep you warm longer and hold up for years as long as you wash and care for them properly.

Machine wash with warm water, use Woolite or a gentle laundry soap so colors won't fade. Always use a fabric softener, liquid or dryer sheets, this keeps the sheets feeling warm and soft. Machine dry on low temperature, too much heat will wrinkle the sheets. If possible take them out before they are fully dry and hang, or hang them out to dry then put them in the dryer to fluff.

There is the polyester sheets, the polyester microfiber sheets made of 100% microfiber polyester are wrinkle resistant and offers a lower resistance to static and piling than most other fabrics. the fabric is strong, machine washable-washes easily and dries quickly also can by dry-cleaned. The polyester sheets are resistant to wrinkles, mildew, stretching, shrinkage, abrasions and are comfortable, offering insulation and breath-ability.

Machine wash in warm water with mild laundry soap, machine dry with a fabric softener, fold or put on the bed. Quick and easy.

Choose the right bedding, sheets and accessories for you child and taking proper care can make them last and be nice for years.

As a parent, ask yourself the following questions, and see which answer you'd pick. How you respond will help you determine if you're prepared to make Halloween fun for your little child.

1. When it comes to decorating for Halloween, I:
a) let my children help.
b) put up the decorations while they're at school.
c) worry too much about pumpkin carving injuries, so we skip that.

If you answered A, congrats! Kids love to be involved, and by letting them help, it adds an air of excitement to Halloween. It's one thing to know it's coming, but it seems so much more real when you're carving pumpkins and putting up orange blinky lights. No one wants to buy 3 or 4 costumes for their child, especially since children grow so fast, but sometimes a child will not wear their original choice. When that happens, sometimes all you can do is sigh and purchase them a new costume. If your child decides early on they want to be something, I recommend purchasing the costume online. Many of the larger Internet retailers have a flexible return policy in case your child decides to change costume choices.

This can go either way, but in most cases, it's false. Small children don't usually like to be scared, although once they get a little older, they can't get enough of it. The last thing you want is for your small kids to be convinced that the things that go bump in the night are coming to get them after Halloween is over.
